Gladiolus — August's Flower
August
also Poppy
Summer
The gladiolus grows from a corm into tall, sword-shaped foliage topped by a spike of funnel-shaped blooms in late summer, prized by florists for dramatic height in a vase. Born in volcanic rock (and rarely in meteorites), it comes from Arizona and Pakistan. A bright keepsake.
What the gladiolus says
In the Victorian language of flowers, meanings were a shared code — close enough to look up, personal enough to feel chosen. The gladiolus traditionally carries:
- Traditionally a flower of strength and integrity
- Associated with sincerity
August keeps a second flower too — the poppy — for the months where one bloom never felt like enough.
The month around it
A August birthday sits under Leo and Virgo, alongside the month's stone (Peridot) and its full moon, the Sturgeon Moon. The flower is the soft-spoken one of the three.
