Sapphire — September's Stone
September
Deep blue
Sapphire is the blue variety of corundum, its color drawn from traces of iron and titanium, and at Mohs 9 it is exceptionally hard. Prized stones come from Kashmir, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar.
What tradition gives the sapphire
Gem lore is older than mineralogy and less careful — which is part of its charm. Worn for a birthday month, the sapphire traditionally carries:
- Traditionally associated with truth and loyalty
- A stone of wisdom in tradition
Offered as tradition
Meanings here are cultural tradition — a way of giving a stone a story, never a claim about what it does.
The month around it
September's stone keeps company with the month's flower (Aster), its full moon, the Harvest Moon, and the signs that pass through it — Virgo and Libra.
